THE BIRTHDAY BID by SUZETTE D HARRISON

Book Blurb:

It’s blackmail, blindfolds, and her fortieth birthday. How else would beauty influencer, Senaé Dawson, wind up at a bachelor auction? Whisked away without a say, her besties treat her to a birthday bid at an auction featuring decadent Black men. Inevitably infected by the hype, Senaé’s excitement hits hyper drive until the blindfold’s removed from her eyes. She’s dumbstruck to discover she’s just “bought” her ex-husband.

Lexington “Lex” Ryde turned his love for cars into a multi-million dollar private transportation business serving Black Hollywood’s A-list. His line of work taught Lex to be prepared at a moment’s notice. But seeing his ex-wife face-to-face for the first time in twenty years leaves him feeling as if “sucker-punched by Tyson and Holyfield.” Thanks to their problematic past, neither is pleased with this bachelor auction “ridiculousness”, or the instant flare of hot, sexual attraction erupting between them. But being Mama Peaches’ first foster child, Lex can’t renege. He’s stuck with the auction results…and the unpleasant truth that he’s still in love with his ex.

Take the ride with Senaé and Lex! They’ll confront a painful past, consider their present, and encounter an unwanted admirer who must be dealt with.

Review:

I’ve been looking forward to the novellas in this series for a few months now. Although the books are connected via the bachelor auction, each novella is independent of each other.

This is a new author to me and I was pleasantly surprised. The bachelor auction was hilarious and led to the first little twist regarding Senae and Lex’s past relationship. The total support system that both of the characters had was also refreshing to read.

This is a very easy read and flows from beginning to end. There are some surprises that kept me entertained and moments that brought tears to my eyes. A Good Read.

Funniest Scene: Chapter 2

“Lex, baby, I’m sorry, but every bidder not only received but signed a copy of the auction rules and regulations.”

“And I helped write them, so I know it was kindergarten-clear,” Miss Geraldine added, fussing with her wig. “no refunds,. No renege.”

The Dove chic piped up before Lex could get a word in. “Ma’am, we’re not trying to renege. We’ll honor the bid-“

“Oh, I know you will, young lady! All winning bids are final and as is,. Plus, we have your debit or credit card numbers on file and if need be, we’ll charge them.”

“Yes, ma’am , we understand. But-“

“But what?” On a different day, Lex would’ve laughed at Mama Peaches’ comeback. “We ain’t Jewel Osco’s grocery. You’re not buying and returning a bad batch of ham hocks and greens. How we gonna give back your money and rebuild the community?”

The one named Ima stepped up like some foreign ambassador sent to negotiate across enemy lines. “Might I make a suggestion? What if you allowed us to transfer the bid to a different bachelor due to extenuating circumstances?”

Baby, where’re you from?”

“Kenya.”

“Well that explains you thinking you can barter with me. This ain’t no open-air market in the Motherland, so take a seat.”.
