Book Blurb:
CHICAGO MADE THEM WHO THEY ARE.
NOW IT’S TIME FOR THEM TO PAY IT FORWARD.
When Nicholas Brown gets a call from Mama Peaches to come back home for a neighborhood bachelor auction, he doesn’t want to do it. But who can say no to Mama Peaches? As a surgeon known for taking calculated risks for big rewards, he lives his life fast, crazy and on the edge. To save himself from the claws of women placing bids at the auction, this bachelor comes up with a scheme… Despite how things ended, Nick has always held a torch for his beautiful, former high school sweetheart, Raina Lawson. So, who better to bid on him than a woman he trusts? She’s a safe bet, which makes her the best bet!
After high school graduation, Nick left her high and dry without any real explanation. And now, the impressive doc wants her help. As a social worker, she’s great at helping others, so when she learns more about Nick’s reasons for coming home, she can’t help but sympathize with him. However, despite her best efforts, she’s still bitter about the break-up and to rub it in even more, Nick seems to have only gotten sexier with age. Getting played sucks but ignoring their chemistry sucks more. Only this time, she isn’t blinded by his charm. This time, he’s playing by her rules.

Review:
I’ve been looking forward to the novellas in this series for a few months now. Although the books are connected via the bachelor auction, each novella is independent of each other.
This story is about high school sweethearts finding their way back together. For whatever reason, Nick seemed to think that the only way for him to succeed was following his own path alone. So he up and left leaving everyone behind. What he finally realizes is that not all paths should be walked alone.
Raina, although deeply hurt by Nick’s callous goodbye, picks herself up and follows her dreams to become a social worker and help lost children like Nick. Unfortunately because of the way he broke her heart, she’s in a relationship with a guy she just can’t take that final step of commitment with. Granted, he’s the biggest jerk on earth, but deep down she is not over Nick, her first love.
Their reunion was pretty uneventful, except for when Logan showed up, but that drama was dealt with outside of the story line, so we can only imagine how that conversation went down. I also would have liked to know more about his mom, since that was a big part of Nick’s reason for returning to Chicago.
MVP Characters: Lane and Sydney
Lane: Nick’s foster brother
Nickname: Chrome Dome
Sydney’s nemesis – or is he?
Sydney: Raina’s best friend
Nickname: Olive Oyl
Lane’s nemesis – or is she?
These two kept me laughing throughout. Hopefully they get their own book.
