THE BID CATCHER by ANITA DAVIS

Book Blurb:

All Jeremy Brighton ever wanted to do was be a chef and own his own restaurant. Failed attempts at sustaining his dream sends him back to Chicago where he knows his restaurant can thrive. Problem is, the prime location for his neighborhood is in major need of revitalization. A bachelor auction planned to raise the remaining funds necessary to restore the hood may be the remedy to Southlake’s problem, but there’s no way Jeremy would ever agree to be a bachelor in the auction. Will his stubbornness cost him his restaurant dreams?

Naima Grant has moved to Chicago for several reasons: to be closer to her favorite cousin; to spend more time with her grandmother; and to put as much distance as she can from the life she once shared with her ex-husband. Southlake Park may be her good luck charm, especially when she learns she’ll be spending some much-needed time with her childhood crush. Yet just like before, he only sees her as a friend, but she plans to make the most of their time together whether he’s ready for her or not.

Review:

I’ve been looking forward to the novellas in this series for a few months now. Although the books are connected via the bachelor auction, each novella is independent of each other.

This is a childhood friendship to lovers story. Both characters are in a transition period in their life. Jeremy is moving back home and trying to find the courage to make a go again of his restaurant and Naima is recovering from a bad marriage. Naima’s feelings for Jeremy aren’t new and in her own way she is trying to show him her interest. He is just oblivious to her interest.

The best part of this story is the friendship between Naima and Jeremy. Even though Jeremy couldn’t catch a clue about Naima’s feelings for him, he still defended her when her ex was harassing her. She encourages him to take the leap of faith in regards to his restaurant and respects his wishes not to participate in the auction. It is nice how they reconnected, so that by the time everything is out in the open, there is really no big shift in their relationship. It’s just a seamless transition.

A quick and nice read.

Favorite Characters: Peaches and Geraldine

“I was still so hot and bothered when I got out the shower that I figured going to the gym would help me since they say you release them dolphins when you exercise.”

Mama Peaches’ face scrunched as she mouthed “dolphins” several times. Still not grasping what Geraldine was saying, she asked, “What? Dolphins live in the ocean.”

“Naw, you know, them things that make you happy. Them dolphins.”

“You mean endorphins?”

“That’s what I said, them dolphins.”
