SWITCHED AT BID by NICOLE FALLS

Book Blurb:

Lifelong friends Maurice Kirkwood and Alecia Woods briefly shared an ill-fated attempt at crossing the line into something more a few years ago. The decision to split was a mutual one, but left residual feelings of longing on both sides of the chasm between them. Miscommunication led to the breakdown, but Maurice is determined to mend the rift and reunite the two of them permanently. Alecia, however, is not so much on the same plan as Maurice. After being being drafted to participate in a bachelor auction to help raise funds for the revitalization of his old neighborhood, Maurice sees the pieces of trying to reconnect with Alecia falling into place. Enlisting the help of their other best friend— and Maurice’s twin—Monica, a plan is hatched to bring Alecia and Maurice back together again; for good this time.

Author’s Note: These characters first appear in the short story, Pucker Up, which can be found in Sparks Fly by me! The story provides some context, but does not necessarily need to be read to enjoy this novella.

Review:

I’ve been looking forward to the novellas in this series for a few months now. Although the books are connected via the bachelor auction, each novella is independent of each other.

Although this book was about Maurice and Alecia, I was actually more interested in the secondary story line between Ty and Monica (Maurice’s twin sister).

It started off good, with Monica trying to help Maurice get Alecia back by bidding on him in the bachelor auction, but after that, they sorta fizzled. Most of the book was each character musing to themselves about how much they wanted to be with each other, but wasn’t sure of how the other felt about that. I didn’t really feel the heat between them. I got more of a best girl/guy friend vibe. We don’t learn about what broke them up the first time until almost the end and honestly the reason seemed kinda weak. To me, it just seemed neither one were mature enough to handle a relationship.

Now Ty and Monica on the other hand. I wanted to know why they are keeping their relationship quiet? Is it because of his career or something with Monica? Why won’t they talk to Maurice about it? He seems to be out of the loop, even though he knows they are together. Why are they so invested in Maurice and Alecia’s relationship? What happened in London that had them pissed at each other? These are questions left unresolved.

Another thing left unresolved, why was Monica so in her feelings about her Mom getting married and moving to Phoenix? The topic was brought up a few times, but then just kinda faded away.

It was an ok read for me because too many story line threads were left open.
