THE SWEDE by MAUREEN SMITH

Book Blurb:

Scarlett Warner has three passions: singing, drumming, and hockey. She’s already living her dream as frontwoman of an indie rock band. And then she meets NHL superstar Viggo Sandström, her favorite player and secret fantasy.

She wanted him from the very first moment she saw him. How could she not?

He’s six feet five inches of Scandinavian scrumptiousness, all rock-hard muscles and searing intensity. He’s a scoring machine on the ice, driven to win at all costs.

Nicknamed “The Sandstorm,” he crashes his way into her heart, demolishing her defenses. Every look, every smile, every touch sets her heart pounding like a kick drum. He makes her body sing, and she can’t get enough.

He’s got a few demons to work through, but so does she. Does that make them the perfect match? Or will they end up derailing each other’s dreams?

All Scarlett knows is that she needs him like nothing she’s ever needed before. It should send her running in the other direction.

But there’s no running from The Swede….

Review:

What can I say except BRAVO!! The Swede is the perfect chaser to Wicked Games, the first book in the Denver Rebels series. Viggo and Scarlett are fated to be together. After a few false starts, these two finally get together and it’s explosive. Both have volatile personalities and their fights are epic, which of course means their make-ups are out of this world. Both of them are headstrong and wary of the connections because of past hurts. But underneath all that bravado are two hearts that recognize each other and are willing to take a chance at true happiness.

The Swede is a full length interracial romance. It’s a big book, but so worth it. Instead of Chapter numbers, the chapters are named after songs. This just makes the book super sexy in my opinion. Actually, Super sexy does not even come close to describing the heat between Scarlett and Viggo. This is one racy book and some of the scenes will have you blushing, believe me.

The author touches on many social issues and the characters have real world discussions that are refreshing. There is no “political” correctness with the dialogue. The characters have honest conversations that help shed light on some of the biases that are prevalent. This includes interracial dating, social/class status, abuse, and homophobia.

One of secondary story lines in this book is about Lennox, Scarlett’s brother. He is struggling with coming out to his family as gay. The scenes are so emotional. They run the gambit from fear and sadness to hopeful and potential happiness.

I don’t want to spoil anything, but be on the look out for what I call the “reunion”. It pretty much starts in Desperado, catches fire in You Give Love a Bad Name, and explodes in Hate That I Love You. These were my absolute favorite chapters in the book.
